may day

A child eats an apple near the entrance to the Forbidden City in Beijing, China, Sunday, May 1, 2011. Tens of thousands of visitors flock to the popular tourist site as residents enjoy a public holiday to mark May Day.
Tens of thousands of people are marking international worker's day in Turkey by marching through Istanbul, demanding more jobs, better work conditions and higher wages.
Pro-labor rallies also were taking place in other countries on Sunday, known as May Day or Labor Day.
In Asia, about 2,000 people rallied in Taiwan's capital to protest that nation's increasing income gap and to demand their government create better work conditions.
In Istanbul, about 200,000 workers gathered in Taksim Square in the largest such rally there since 34 people died on May Day in 1977, when shooting triggered a stampede.
The Turkish unions weren't allowed back into the square on May Day until last year.
Pro-labor demonstrations also are expected Sunday in Russia and Germany.

Beltane or May Day is the mid-way point between spring and summer, and for many pagan practitioners, it's a time to celebrate the abundance of nature. But this year, I'm just not feeling it.
